Team
Team

I collaborated on a project with a dynamic 13-person team. We brought together a range of design disciplines including architecture, interior design, fashion, textiles, and graphics (with me as the industrial product designer).

Our team was further supported by an anthropologist, project manager, business advisor, media specialist, videographer, and photographer, ensuring a well-rounded approach to the project.

Challenges
Challenges
  • Limited Departmental Collaboration: Initially, we only partnered with one government department. Gaining diverse perspectives from other departments were difficult.

  • Unique Creative Space: Banyuwangi already had a well-established smart city initiative. We had to identify creative economic opportunities beyond addressing major technological issues.

1. Comprehensive Government Collaboration: We conducted interviews and data collection not just with the initial department but also expanded our reach by collaborating with other relevant government departments and stakeholders. This ensured a well-rounded understanding of the creative economy landscape in Banyuwangi.

2. Cultural Economic Impact: We interviewed culture experts to gain valuable insights into the potential economic impact by leveraging Banyuwangi's unique cultural heritage. This perspective helped us identify opportunities to integrate cultural aspects into the creative economy strategy.

3. Collaborative Mapping: We facilitated workshops with local craftsmen and SMEs. This collaborative approach served two purposes: firstly, it allowed us to map out all the key economic actors within the city, and secondly, it fostered connections and collaboration opportunities between designers, artisans, and entrepreneurs.

4. Tourist Potential Exploration: We conducted site visits to Banyuwangi's tourist spots. By analyzing these locations, we were able to map out the economic potential that tourism holds for the creative economy. This helped us tailor our recommendations to maximize the synergy between tourism and creative industries.

  1. Define

  1. Define

Through extensive research, including interviews, observations, and data analysis; in second month - 7 days, we have identified Banyuwangi's potential for creative economy growth, driven by its escalating tourism sector. Our comprehensive mapping encompasses diverse tourism destinations: ranging from beaches, mountains, forests and cultural attractions. We have further searched into three key aspects: attractions, accessibility, and amenities.

At the core of our strategy lies the creation of a one-spot integrated concept, bringing together home industries, artisans, entrepreneurs, and cultural practitioners under a unified umbrella. This dynamic ecosystem requires continuous government monitoring and support.

Banyuwangi has an abundance of distinctive commodities, including bamboo, batik, traditional attire, coffee, tasteful culinary, snacks, and the Gandrung dance. These diverse treasures hold vast potential to be transformed into creative economic opportunities within the tourism sector.

By harnessing the potential of these unique commodities, Banyuwangi can establish itself as a hub for creative expression, fostering economic growth and cultural vibrancy within the tourism sector.

In collaboration with the local government, we have established long-term goals for Banyuwangi's creative economy, serving as a blueprint for future government programs. Our goal is to achieve self-sustaining tourism. To this end, we have devised a four-month short-term strategy within the IKKON program framework.

How Might We (HMW) Statement:

"HMW foster collaboration between home industries, artisans, entrepreneurs, and cultural practitioners to effectively fulfill to the wave of tourists in Banyuwangi?"

  1. IDEATION

  1. IDEATION

Banyuwangi's Essence: A Souvenir Box Concept

We propose a unique souvenir box concept that collaborate among artisans, home industries, and economic practitioners. The souvenir box, aptly named "Kanggi," derives its name from the Banyuwangi word "kangge," meaning "special gift."

Kanggi will serve as a Banyuwangi's five senses:

Touch: The smooth, tactile sensation of bamboo will be represented by a handcrafted bamboo item.

Hear: The rhythmic tinkling of a traditional Banyuwangi bell will evoke the region's vibrant soundscape.

Vision: Banyuwangi's batik heritage will be showcased patterns and colors through a piece of batik fabric.

Smell: The aroma of freshly brewed Banyuwangi coffee.

Taste: A delicious local snack.

This initial concept serves as a flexible framework that can be adapted to meet market demands and preferences.

Still in the second 14 days, we were establishing a visual identity and ensure alignment with our branding, style, and color palette, we crafted a mood board and image board. These visual tools serve as a guide for our design decisions, ensuring that the souvenir box and its contents related to the aesthetic and functionality.

The mood board and image board provide requirements for the design of the bamboo box:

  • Utilize natural bamboo tones, highlight the material's texture, and include organic shapes.

  • Combine batik patterns and hand-painted designs.

  • Design a practical and spacious box that accommodates the curated items efficiently.

My role lies in designing the souvenir box and bell, ensuring an aesthetically pleasing and functional presentation that enhances the overall experience.

Idea 1: Gandrung's Crown as Design Muse

The first concept drew inspiration from the crown of the Gandrung dancer, capturing the essence of the Banyuwangi's heritage. The box would embody the crown's through flowing lines, curved shapes, and a bold color palette.

Idea 2: Sustainability Through Batik Scraps

The second concept embraced sustainability, transforming discarded batik scraps into decorative elements. This innovative approach not only minimized waste but also added a unique touch to the box, reflecting Banyuwangi's commitment to environmental consciousness.

Brainstorming and Decision-Making

Through collaborative brainstorming sessions, the design team carefully evaluated each concept. Ultimately, the second idea, centered on sustainability and creative reuse.

Refining the Design: Efficiency and Craftsmanship

With the concept finalized, the focus shifted to refining the design, ensuring both production efficiency and compatibility with the skills of local artisans.

Throughout my collaboration with bamboo artisans, I prioritized optimizing the contents of the Kanggi souvenir box. This involved experimenting with various configurations for the batik, snacks, coffee, and bell. By testing different arrangements, I was able to determine the ideal box size to ensure everything fit perfectly.

  1. PRODUCTION

  1. PRODUCTION

In the third month - 14 days, I was focusing on producing prototypes and generate production line collaborating with craftspeople. I collaborated with craftspeople in Gintangan village. Uniquely, in the village of Gintangan, bamboo craftsmanship is not confined to men. Women play an equally important role, specializing in bamboo weaving, while men focus on shaping the structures into boxes or other functional objects.

The Creation of Kanggi: A Collaborative Effort

The process begins with the women crafting the bamboo weave, followed by a molding stage where the box and its lid are shaped to ensure a perfect fit. Finally, the women return to add a touch of artistry, weaving batik fabric into a decorative border.

Once the box is complete, its contents are carefully placed inside and sealed with a protective paper covering. This final step ensures that the precious items within remain safe and perfect, ready to be presented as a souvenir.

  1. EXHIBITION

  1. EXHIBITION

From Design to Exhibition

At the last 14 days, the Kanggi souvenir box was ready to be unveiled to the world. The team's hard work paid off when they were given the opportunity to showcase at the Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival (BEC), a major cultural festival. To further enhance the storytelling aspect, I drew a mural on the walls to explain the concept of Kanggi, showcasing the the five senses of Banyuwangi.

The exhibition brought a crowd, including notable figures like the Mayor of Banyuwangi and the Minister of Tourism. Both were deeply impressed by Kanggi's innovative use of traditional materials, particularly the sustainable practices and the craftsmanship.

My creative explorations extended beyond Kanggi, leading me to design a range of products using bamboo and batik. Bamboo mirrors, bamboo boxes in varying sizes, and a versatile lamp captured Banyuwangi's artistry. Each piece, crafted with the essence of Gintangan village.
